  • The perfect employee doesn't need to be told what to do. They know what has to be done. They know how to do it. They get on with the job without needing supervision. They know when to call in others and when to work on their own. They produce the right outcome on time, and in budget.

That sounds a lot like being your own boss.

You weren't born that way. Neither were your employees.

So how could you speed up development?

By creating an ecosystem that supports and enables the things that drive it: autonomy, competence and relatedness.

Enable competence by documenting 'what has to happen' to share and leep your business's promise to customers, then help them learn it in the most effective way, by doing it.   Create feedback mechanisms that operate as directly as possible so people can see the results as they go.

Enable relatedness by having people learn together, rotate through roles and get together regularly both to socialise and to practise and improve 'what has to happen'.

Then enable autonomy by letting them get on with it.
