Here's an idea that was ahead of its time:

Instead of vertically integrating suppliers, the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society in Woolwich decided to set each one up as it's own co-operative business, and rent them a home on the RACS 'business park' on Woolwich Church Street.
1,500 people employed in 21 different trades.
Every one of them a boss.
