    Did it do them any good that way?

    Almost certainly not.

    Could it do anyone any good that way?

    Possibly.   There's evidence that in prehistory, burying or depositing valuables somewhere unreachable was a way of taking them out of circulation, making it impossible for one person to build up disproportionate power.

    A better way to solve that problem would have been to simply share it.

    Like responsibility, money works best when its distributed and circulating.
